Things You Need To Know As A Mom Author
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW AS A MOM AUTHOR ππ€
Being a mom and an author is not always easy. You are raising a child while also trying to build a career, create stories, meet deadlines, and chase your dreams.
Here are a few things every mom author needs to remember:
- You don't have to write every day.
Some days you will write 3,000 words. Other days, you may write nothing. That's okay.
- Use the little pockets of time you have.
Even 15 minutes can be enough to write a scene, edit a chapter, or plan your next book.
- Keep your ideas somewhere safe.
Great story ideas can come at the most random times. Keep your phone or a notebook nearby.
- Don't compare your writing journey to someone else's.
You may not have the same free time as another author, and that's perfectly fine.
- Motherhood can make you tired.
Don't feel guilty for needing rest. You can't create your best work when you're completely exhausted.
- Create realistic goals.
Instead of forcing yourself to write 10 chapters every week, choose a target that works with your life.
- Your writing doesn't have to be perfect on the first draft.
Write the story first. You can edit and improve it later.
- Learn the business side of writing.
Understand contracts, royalties, copyright, publishing rights, exclusivity, payments, marketing, and promotion.
- Never sign a contract you don't understand.
Take your time and read the terms carefully before agreeing to anything.
- Back up your work.
Keep copies of your manuscripts, contracts, covers, book links, and important author documents.
- Protect your writing time.
When you get an opportunity to write, try to treat that time as important.
- Don't feel guilty for having dreams outside motherhood.
Being a mother doesn't mean you have to stop being ambitious.
- Some seasons will be slower than others.
Your child may need more attention sometimes. Your writing career can slow down without ending.
- Celebrate small wins.
Finishing a chapter, publishing a book, gaining a new reader, signing a contract, or making your first payment are all worth celebrating.
- Build something that belongs to you.
Your books, your author name, your audience, and your writing career can become something you're proud to pass on as part of your story.
- Your child doesn't make your dreams impossible.
Motherhood may change the way you pursue your dreams, but it doesn't mean you have to give them up.
- Give yourself grace.
You are doing two difficult jobs at once: raising a child and building a career.
- Keep going.
You may have to write slowly. You may have to pause sometimes. You may have to start again.
But don't convince yourself that because you're a mom, you can't become the author you've always wanted to be.
You can be a good mother AND a successful author. π€π
Keep writing. Keep building. Keep believing in your stories.
