The squirrel behavior that finally made sense once I read about it

Squirrels burying acorns looked like chaos to me for years — frantic, directionless, seemingly random digging all over the yard. Then I read that a lot of that apparent randomness is deliberate misdirection: squirrels will fake-bury nuts, or rebury them elsewhere, specifically when they notice they're being watched by another squirrel who might steal the cache.

Once I knew that, the behavior stopped looking chaotic and started looking like actual strategy — check surroundings, dig a decoy hole here, walk further, bury the real one there, glance back to see who noticed.

It's a small thing, but it changed how I watch backyard wildlife generally: assuming there's a reason behind behavior I can't immediately explain, rather than assuming randomness by default.
