The screen-time rule that stopped the daily argument

Screen time was a fight every single day until we switched from a time-based rule ("thirty minutes") to a sequence-based one ("after homework and one chore, screen time is yours, no further negotiation"). The daily argument mostly disappeared, not because the total amount of screen time changed much, but because the rule stopped requiring a negotiation each time.

Time-based limits invite constant renegotiation — "just five more minutes" is always technically arguable. Sequence-based rules don't invite the same argument, because the condition is binary: either the homework and chore are done, or they aren't. There's nothing to negotiate about degree.

It's a small reframe, but it removed an entire daily conflict from our house almost immediately.
