The interview question that tells you everything

After sitting on both sides of the table for over a decade, there's one question I ask every candidate now: "Tell me about a time a plan fell apart and what you did next."

Not "tell me about a challenge" — that gets rehearsed answers. This one is specific enough that people can't fake it convincingly. You can hear immediately whether someone actually adapts under pressure or just talks about adapting.

The best answers aren't the ones with the happiest ending. They're the ones where the person can tell you exactly what they'd do differently next time. That's the actual signal — not whether they won, but whether they learned something real from not winning.
