The science fiction premise I keep returning to across different books
The idea that shows up again and again in the science fiction I love most isn't aliens or faster-than-light travel — it's the moment a character realizes the rules they built their whole worldview on were a local case, not a universal law. That's the actual engine of the genre for me, more than any specific technology.
The best versions don't announce it. They just quietly let a character's certainty crack, one observation at a time, until the reader realizes the crack before the character does. That gap — knowing before the character knows — is where the genuine unease of good science fiction lives, more than in any monster or machine.
I've noticed the books that do this well tend to be quieter than their premises suggest. The loudest, most spectacle-driven sci-fi rarely has room for that slow crack. It needs silence to work, and silence is the one thing spectacle can't afford.

The gap between the reader knowing and the character knowing is basically the same tension good game writing chases too. Never connected the two before this.
