Nobody warns you about the year after the promotion

Everyone prepares you for the promotion itself — negotiate the raise, ask about scope, all of that. Nobody prepares you for month eight, when the initial motivation has worn off but the new responsibilities haven't gotten any lighter.

That stretch is where most people either quietly burn out or quietly grow into the role, and the difference isn't talent — it's whether they built support systems before they needed them. A mentor they can be honest with. A peer at a similar level going through the same thing. Boundaries that existed before the job demanded them.

If you just got promoted, the advice I'd give isn't about performance. It's: build the support system now, while things still feel manageable, because the demanding stretch is coming whether you're ready or not.
